GMQ

Modern Music Dan thumbnail
Modern Music Dan Recorded over two days with the ensemble in the same room, there's a tight-knit focus to the ensemble energy that creates a wonderfully sharp edge to the whole set. It's an album that clearly sets out to showcase Geoff's light-footed yet razor-sharp wielding of the instrument; a highly satisfying listen, bristling with sparkling energy from all the players. Favorite track: Tell me a Bedtime Story.

    GMQ is a new album from the Geoff Mason Quartet and includes tunes from modern jazz masters, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock.
    The recording was made over two days at the JVG studio in Brixton where it was engineered and produced by Dave O'Higgins. All members of the band work regularly with trombonist Geoff Mason; John Horler (Cleo Laine, Matt Ford), Adam King (Ronnie Scott’s, 606 Club) and Winston Clifford (British Jazz Award winner, 2018).
    The CD features Geoff's favourite composers and includes pieces not always associated with the trombone, such as Thelonious Monk's “Trinkle Tinkle” and John Coltrane's “26-2”.
    To enhance spontaneity the players recorded together in the same room and most of the tracks were first or second takes. The CD comes in a cardboard sleeve and includes personal and track listings

    Press Reviews;

    Geoff Mason, one of the UK's leading jazz trombonists, mans the front line by himself on the slyly named GMQ, an eloquent quartet session from Mason which binds works by jazz masters John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock and Thelonious Monk to a pair of lesser-known originals ("Beyond All Limits," "L's Bop").
    All About Jazz

    This beautifully recorded CD features a quartet of obvious empathy and enthusiasm. Geoff’s rich tone, dexterity and unerring energy pervade throughout, and the tasty rhythm section get plenty of opportunity to let their abundant creative juices flow. The chosen program of interesting, not over-aired modern
    jazz themes is very refreshing, although Geoff has certainly not made life easy
    for himself! – the tricky heads encompassing a wide range on the instrument and the chord changes going through a dazzling array of key centres make for a real work-out. It is lovely to hear an artist pushing themselves technically and creatively, thus encapsulating the best attributes of a true musician and improviser.

    Geoff Mason is a highly sought after and versatile trombonist based in the UK. This album features a well curated mix of some lesser known modern-jazz standards by three of the era’s giants. Tunes by Coltrane, Monk, and Hancock are paired with those by Shaw and White and allow plenty of room for all members of the quartet to express and exhibit their outstanding musicianship.
    Mason’s approach to the trombone if full of energy and life. His impressive technique and pure sound allow the listener to become completely immersed in the melodic and harmonic journey of each tune. AddiSonally,
    his all-star rhythm section largely contributes to the enjoyment of each tune. Horler (piano), King (bass), and Clifford (drums) all perform impressive and musical solos that merit repeated hearings.
    It should be noted that this album was recorded over a two-day period, during which the musicians all recorded in the same room, and the first or second take is what is heard on the album. This was a bold and challenging move by the quartet, but one that has paid off greatly. The creaSvity, spontaneity, and collecSve energy is palpable throughout each tune.
    Mason’s tune selecSons also shows that he welcomes a challenge. Tunes like Monk’s “Trinkle Tinkle” and Coltrane’s “26-2” are not oYen performed on trombone, and for good reason. The virtuosity needed to effectively execute the tricky heads and continuous chord changes are possessed by few trombonists. While admittedly , there are a few more chipped notes, tuning inconsistencies, and phasing between players, few could argue that these imperfections detract from the musicianship displayed.
    This album will be a wonderful addition to any trombonist or jazz lover’s library.
